Simple Ways to Turn Rough Mornings Around
10/3/20262 min read

Rough mornings can really put a wrench into the whole day. We have all experienced those mornings with our kiddos when nothing seems to go smoothly. Maybe someone had a poor night’s sleep, an important folder was forgotten, or getting dressed and out the door turned into a major struggle. Whatever the reason, tough mornings happen to every family.
Over time, I’ve found a few simple habits that help our family start the day on a more positive note, even when everyone wakes up feeling cranky.
Prepare as Much as Possible the Night Before
One of the biggest things that helps our mornings run more smoothly is preparing the night before. We usually pack lunches, organize backpacks, and lay out clothes for the next day before heading to bed. These small tasks make a big difference when morning arrives.
Preparing ahead means we are less likely to scramble around looking for missing homework, permission slips, or favorite shirts. We can also make sure everything we need is packed and ready to go. Another benefit is that we do not have to turn on every light or make lots of noise while waking siblings who may sleep a little later.
Find Something Positive to Look Forward To
If one of my sons is having a rough morning, I try to remind him of something good or exciting that is coming up that day. It might be an after-school activity, such as soccer practice, or something simple, like having physical education class.
Sometimes we talk about seeing friends, enjoying recess, or having warm weather to play outside. The goal is not to pretend that a difficult feeling does not exist. Instead, I want to help my child remember that one frustrating moment does not define the entire day. There may still be something enjoyable waiting ahead.
Say Goodbye with Love and Encouragement
When I drop my boys off at school, I always make a point of telling them that I love them and hope they have a good day. My older two currently enjoy when I wave as they walk through the school doors, so I make sure to give them that little moment whenever I can.
I try to stay present instead of immediately checking my phone or getting distracted by conversations with other parents. Giving them my full attention helps them feel supported and reminds them that they matter, even during a rushed morning.
Small Habits Can Make a Big Difference
These are just a few things that help our family handle difficult mornings. Preparing ahead, focusing on something positive, and ending goodbyes with love can create a calmer start, even when the day begins imperfectly.
What does your family do to get going in the morning? Do you have any tips or tricks for making rough morning routines easier? Share your ideas—another parent may find exactly the encouragement they need.
